New Ovation Hybrid coming

I’ve been looking at hybrids (dual-voiced guitars, both acoustic and electric) and archtop (hollowbody) electrics. It’s tough to pick which one I want to go after. I will eventually get one or the other. The hybrid gives a lot of flexibility, that’s for sure.

There’s a new one by Ovation, using duncan pickups (’59s) and fishman under-saddle pickups. It seems really nice in the videos, though the Michael Kelly, Crafter, Taylor, and Godin hybrids seem mighty nice too. Ahh, it’s so nice to have so much nice stuff and all the time in the world to pick something nice (after all, I’m gonna have to save up).

This pic is from MySpace where there is a page devoted to the guitar:

Pop over to the official web page to see the clean, beautiful black-n-chrome-ness of it. It’s like a classic harley. It really is gorgeous. No ugly details or hanging parts to distract, no unnecessary controls (though I’d like a separate tone pot for each pickup). Really, really clean and slick-looking.

There is also a nice mashup video on youtube showing off the versatility of the guitar in the hands of different players.

  1. That is a pretty sweet deal. Doesn’t touch the Taylor, but nice guitar.

  2. Sigh. I wish I could play. But I’m all thumbs, and some of them seem to be on the wrong hands.

Um, why does this one look like a little toe?

  3. For a minute, I thought you were saying that the guitar looked like a toe. I was trying to see it. Some mornings I’m slower than some others.

The Taylor’s F-holes look so much nicer, but the Koa T5 is beyond gorgeous.

Too bad it’s also beyond $1,800.00 too.

There is a guitar by Crafter that got favorable reviews, at least for the money.

I don’t think that the ovation is the hottest-looking, but it’s very clean looking and the sound samples are quite nice.

The ovation is different. It has two Duncan pickups and looks more electric, rather than a single lipstick pickup. I think it should be better as an electric guitar, but of course has an split (acoustic) personality. I’ve always liked how ovation acoustic guitars sound through an amp. I would expect the taylor and the Ovation to have a better acoustic sound than most. ‘Course, I’ve never played with a crafter or with a Kelly. Ah, well, I am betting that they’re all going to be pretty nice to use. Just being able to switch between acoustic and electric is a cool idea.

  5. Okay, I played this one and the Schecter C1-E/A this week. I was feeling stupid and couldn’t think of anything to play, so I slid around on some chords and lead riffs a little. It was really beautiful with the transparent black finish showing wood grain through, and the styled F holes. It had a great neck and good pickups. As an electric guitar, I thought it was very nice. The Schecter did not have a convincing acoustic sound.

Then I found the XVT and plugged around a little. The ovation was completely amazing. It has a wonderful acoustic sound (esp through the Fishman LoudBox) and those great Duncan humbuckers. I could see using this guitar for both acoustic and electric work, and could really enjoy switching between the two mid-song. This is a very nice guitar, even though it’s not as pretty as the Crafter or the T5. It was about $1500.00 so I do not own one today. If someone gave one to me, I wouldn’t object. :-)
